Heavy fog doesn't stop train service.

Midway Airport has shut down as a heavy fog has settled on Chicago. O'Hare flights are cut back as well, though not entirely.

Meanwhile, trains keep rolling.

It would be smart to have a redundant intercity travel network - like better Amtrak - to move people when the air network shuts down because of weather.

Yes but not just redundant...as a primary means of travel in midwest corridors. But anyway, I was in Louisville on family business. Yesterday when all the flights to Chicago were cancelled from Louisville, I attempted to get another connection by flying to Charlotte NC. That didn't work and I spent the night in an airport hotel. Today I flew to St. Louis and got a last seat, last minute connection to Chicago before the rain and snow. That is lots of flying and is 24 hours of elapsed time. I would have loved to have dropped the rental car off and picked up one of the "three times daily" dreamed of Amtrak services into Chicago. It will happen some day.

That's a lot of unmet travel demand between Louisville and Chicago -- and all those sold out trains! Fridays and Sundays look to be the busiest days for ticket sales.
